Developing Opportunities to Excel

(Project D.O.E.) AmeriCorps

Project D.O.E. is a five (5) multi-county community and faith-based collaborative between four (4) housing authorities and two (2) non-profit agencies.  The project serves economically disadvantaged youth and adults in the areas of education and economic opportunity to assist them in improving their quality of life.

Project D.O.E. is supported with grant funding from the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service — a division within the Office of Governor Pat McCrory. Burlington Housing Authority is Sponsor/lead agency, under the leadership of Veronica Revels, Executive Director. Patricia Gilliam, Program Director is responsible for administering and implementing this multi-county AmeriCorps project collaborative.

Project D.O.E. consists of (41) AmeriCorps members:  30 Part-time (900 hours) and 11 Minimum-time (300 hours) slots.  Members assist economically disadvantaged individuals by providing education, economic opportunity and healthy futures services that will help them develop the skills needed to improve their quality of life so they can be successful and live independently longer.  AmeriCorps members will be engaged in:

  • Developing, Implementing and Operating
    Community   Programs, such as Pre-K/Afterschool and Summer  Enrichment Programs
  • Tutoring
  • Mentoring
  • Financial Literacy Training
  • Entrepreneurship Training
  • Healthy Futures (1)
    Coordinating services for seniors to help enable them to live independently longer
  • Healthy Futures (2)
    Childhood Obesity (nutrition education, physcial activities and community gardens)
  • Job Training
  • Recruiting, Training and Supervising Community Volunteers
  • Disaster Preparedness Training and Responding to Crisis Situations
